Life after the kids are grown

If you live in Colorado, it’s likely you’ve heard what sounds like a massive wolf pack howling like crazy every night at 8:00. At first, we were perplexed. What in the world was going on? Then I read something that said people in Colorado were encouraged to howl every night in support of all the essential workers who are putting themselves at heightened risk to take care of sick patients, keep stores stocked, etc. At first this seemed kind of silly to me, but as the howling pack grew every night, we decided to give it a try. I tentatively let out my first howl and the response I got was encouraging. This was quite fun! We’ve been howling for about a week now and it’s become something we look forward to each day. We howl in thanks for the essential workers, and there has been an unexpected side effect as well. In this time of isolation, it is really awesome to connect with our neighbors each night. “We are here and we hear you!”, we are are saying to one another without words. I’ve told friends and family in California, Texas, Pennsylvania and Hawaii about the howling and they’ve started it in their own communities. A friend in Miami sent me video of everyone on their balconies ringing bells at 8:00 and a friend in Bavaria, Germany told me that each night a radio station plays the Bavarian National Anthem and people clap and sing along.
I believe with all my heart that no matter how bad a situation is, good can be found if you look hard enough. In this day and age, it is so easy to be disconnected from people, but this has brought communities and the world together in a way that is unprecedented. To find something really good in this atrocious situation, we don’t even have to look hard, we just have to listen at 8:00. I’ll be out there howling my heart out.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”

This is great, Ms. Julie! Love it!

Thanks, LJ! Does Oregon do something like this? If not, you guys should start it. Put the word out and each night it will get bigger and bigger. 😁 xoxo

In France we switch on the lights and applaud from our balconies at 20:00h.

I totally agree!! We did it last night but we were kinda lone wolves. Haha Everyone took an Easter break. Hopefully they’ll be back at it tonight. 🐺

I had the same experience (I live outside Denver) – I heard howling at 8:00 pm and was freaked out for a moment until I found out about the movement. I think it is awesome 🙂

Yeah, it definitely sounds freaky if you don’t know what’s going on. Happy howling!

You should start a howling at 8:00 trend in Mexico. Your new neighbors will be so surprised! 😂
