The Liebster Award is a blogging award which is peer given and a way to promote new blogs and connect people.

Thank you very much to Aixa (Mucho Spanish) for the nomination! Be sure to check out her amazing blog. She writes about travel experiences, adventures in her adopted hometown of NYC (she’s a Venezuelan native) and much more.

Being a relative newbie, I have been blown away by how supportive and encouraging the blogging community is.

Aixa’s Questions for me:

  1. How do you prepare for a trip?

I spend a lot of time researching the “must see” and “must do” things for where we are going. Hours are spent on Trip Advisor and Viator. I create a spread sheet with each day’s itinerary which also includes blocks of free time for serendipitous activities. And I now pre-purchase all tickets for attractions before we go. When we went to San Francisco, we were so excited to see Alcatraz. We had watched “Escape from Alcatraz” and read a lot about its history. We showed up at Fisherman’s Wharf to buy our tickets and I was devastated to learn that they were sold out weeks in advance. We had to settle for a boat ride around the island, which was very disappointing. That day a new term became part of our family’s vernacular. “Remember Alcatraz” means “be prepared in all ways when you travel.”

  1. What is your favorite travel photo?

This is hands down my favorite travel photo to date. This was one of the serendipitous activities we did while in London. We met a lot of nice people at the crosswalk, since there was lots of time to chat waiting for the perfect moment to snap the shot. Getting a moment with no traffic took some time. There is a live street cam there and our friends in California stayed up until 2 a.m. to see us. There is audio as well, so they could hear us talking to them. Technology is amazing!!!

  1. What do you like to bring home from a trip?

I always buy a Christmas tree ornament and something from the local culture, e.g. a chullo from Peru, a lava bead bracelet from Iceland, and a rabbit fur ushanka from Russia. Plus I take thousands of pictures!

  1. What is a food you would never have tried if you never travelled?

I would never have tried alpaca had we not visited Peru. It was rather strong and I didn’t care for it, but Brett liked it a lot. I couldn’t bring myself to try Cuy (guinea pig) though.

  1. What is one mistake you made while traveling?

“Remember Alcatraz.” 🙂

I would like to nominate:

Nesting Nut: A fellow empty nester who loves traveling, reading, and creating a harmonious home environment.

Far Away: A new blog after my own heart, travel adventures and book reviews.

Base Camp at Grand Lake: A fellow Coloradoan who loves the mountains, hiking and taking advantage of all the wonderful things this state has to offer.

My questions:

  1. What is something you’ve done that has been totally out of your comfort zone?
  2. Where will your next adventure be?
  3. What is something you’d like to accomplish in 2018?
  4. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you while traveling?
  5. What are you most grateful for?

  1. This was so interesting and fun to read, Julie. You really do a lot of planning. I’m so impressed that you make a a spreadsheet! We put events and hotels on our shared phone calendar because we forget what day it is but it’s not so detailed.
